ไม้เถาเลื้อยพันมีมือเกาะ ใบเดี่ยว รูปเกือบกลม หยักเว้าเป็นพู ๓ พู ดอกเดี่ยวออกจากซอกใบ เป็นดอกแยกเพศสีเหลือง ผลรูปทรง กระบอก ผิวเรียบ มีหลายเมล็ด ออกดอกมากในช่วงฤดูร้อนและฤดูฝน ขยายพันธุ์โดยการเพาะเมล็ด

Characteristics :

Luffa aegyptica is an annual climber with tendrils. Leaves are simple, sub-orbicular with 3 lobed. Flowers are solitary in leaf axills, unisexual, bright yellow. Fruits are long cylindrical, smooth and contain many seeds. Flowering are mainly in summer or rainy season. This plant can be propagated by seed.

ผลอ่อนนำมาประกอบอาหาร หรือลวกจิ้มนํ้าพริก ผัดใส่ไข่ ผลสุก จะมีเส้นใยแข็งภายใน ไม่ใช้รับประทาน แต่จะนำเส้นใยมาใช้เป็นวัสดุ ขัดถูผิวกายคล้ายฟองนํ้า

Uses and Utilization :

The young fruits are eaten as a vegetable with chilli sauces, cooked in curry and stir-fried with eggs. The fully ripened fruits are strongly fibrous and inedible, which are used to make scrubbing bath sponges.
